AEW’s Tommaso Ciampa has become synonymous with a bald head and big bearded look. However, there was a period when he went on a cruise, clean-shaven, and went unnoticed by wrestling fans.

Ciampa first adopted his trademark untrimmed look during his stint in Ring of Honor in 2014. It has since become a staple of his TV presentation.

Tommaso Ciampa recalls going on a cruise clean-shaven

While speaking on Under The Mat, Tommaso Ciampa looked back on experimenting with a clean-shaven look before going on a holiday with his family.

The former WWE star revealed that it happened during one of his lengthy injury layoffs. He explained that he was recovering from surgery at the time and knew his in-ring return would not take place for at least six months.

Considering this, there was no need for him to maintain his usual TV appearance. Hence, Ciampa decided to go smooth-faced.

He stated, “I shaved it about a year or two prior to that because I had a surgery, maybe a hip or something, whatever it was. We were going on a cruise, the family and I, and I said, ‘This is a good opportunity. I don’t have to be in a ring for at least six months.’”

The clean-shaven move granted him an unexpected benefit. Nobody on the cruise could recognize him. Usually, when a wrestler gets spotted by fans on a holiday, they may be approached for photos and conversations, making it hard to unwind and enjoy a family trip.

Thankfully, Ciampa’s clean-shaven look acted as camouflage. Ciampa also admitted that those were the greatest seven days of his life.

He continued, “I shaved it right before the cruise. Didn’t get recognized once. Greatest seven days of my life.”

Interestingly, Ciampa briefly tried out this look during WWE WrestleMania 41 weekend, but the beard didn’t stay gone for long.

Tommaso Ciampa left WWE in January this year after deciding against renewing his contract. A few days later, the Psycho Killer made his surprise debut on AEW Dynamite. After working a feud with Chris Jericho, Ciampa competed in the Men’s Casion Gauntlet Match at AEW All In.

Currently, Ciampa is embroiled in a rivalry with Mark Briscoe. At this point, the duo does not have an officially booked match for AEW’s upcoming PPV, All Out. It remains to be seen how this rivalry evolves heading into All Out.
