Singer-songwriter James Taylor, one of the defining voices of the 1970s, turns 78 on March 12.

Taylor first broke through with the deeply personal 1970 hit "Fire and Rain," which climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and introduced his warm, introspective folk-rock sound to a wide audience. Just a year later, he earned his first No. 1 hit with "You've Got a Friend," written by his close friend and fellow singer-songwriter Carole King.

The success of those songs helped establish Taylor as one of the leading artists of the singer-songwriter movement that defined much of the early 1970s. His gentle voice and reflective lyrics resonated with listeners and produced a string of beloved songs, including "Sweet Baby James," "Carolina in My Mind," and "Shower the People."
