Tributes are pouring in for "Total Eclipse of the Heart" singer Bonnie Tyler, who is being remembered as an "extraordinary woman with vocals to match."

The three-time Grammy nominee died "unexpectedly" at a hospital in Portugal "as a result of the illness that she was being treated for," her manager, Matt Davis, said in a statement to USA TODAY on Thursday, July 9. She was 75.

In May, Tyler had been hospitalized for emergency intestinal surgery, and she spent a month in an induced coma. Her spokesperson said in June that she was "no longer in a coma but remains very unwell."

Catherine Zeta-Jones said on Instagram that "my heart is broken with the news that our dearest Bonnie Tyler has passed away." Tyler was married to Robert Sullivan, cousin of Zeta-Jones' father. Tyler also performed at Zeta-Jones' wedding to Michael Douglas.

"An extraordinary woman with vocals to match," Zeta-Jones wrote. "A one-of-kind artist, who so easily could have been a comedian because she was one of the funniest people I ever met. Thank you, Bonnie, for the joy you brought so many. Sleep tight beautiful lady. We shall forever 'Keep a Welcome in the Hillsides' of Wales for you."

Jamie Lee Curtis, who noted that Tyler's song "Total Eclipse of the Heart" was used in her 2024 movie "The Last Showgirl," said on Instagram she was "sad to wake up and hear about her passing today."

Bryan Adams also paid tribute on X, noting he will "always be grateful" for the "beautiful version" of his song "Straight from the Heart" that she recorded. "She had such a great voice," he also wrote, adding, "Thanks Bonnie."

In a Facebook post, singer Cliff Richard remembered Tyler as a "wonderful friend," writing, "Bonnie's infectious zest for life entertained so many around the world, and to be a good friend to all, including me. It is shocking news to wake up to you this morning, and I send my love to her family at this very sad time."

Tyler's manager, while confirming her death, said that "we will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy."
