Sophia Peterson, 25, shared the emotional moment her father heard her sing live for the very first time on TikTok
She tells PEOPLE she nearly lost her composure after seeing her dad, Scott āPapa Peteā Peterson, crying in the audience
After the performance, he hugged her and told her, āYou did it kid. Iām beyond proud of you,ā words she says sheāll āforever have engravedā in her mind
It wasnāt the standing ovation or the quiet room that nearly unraveled Sophia Peterson. It was the moment she looked into the audience, saw her father wiping away tears as he heard her truly sing for the first time and realized sheād made him proud.
āI wonāt lie, I sob every time I watch this back,ā Peterson, 25, tells PEOPLE of the TikTok video that captured her father, Scott āPapa Peteā Peterson, overcome with emotion during her performance. āWhen I looked over at him on stage and saw a few tears, I almost couldnāt keep it together. Thereās nothing like that feeling of knowing your parent is proud of you.ā
The touching clip quickly resonated with viewers, showing Papa Pete sitting in the audience, visibly emotional as his daughter sang. While heād heard the occasional belted tune during car rides when she was younger, Peterson says heād never truly heard her perform before that day.
For Peterson, singing has always been part of who she is. She says it has been āa constant,ā from harmonizing with her mom in the car as a child to spending hours singing alone in her room, which made finally sharing that part of herself with her dad feel especially nerve-racking.
The emotions only grew stronger once the performance ended. Peterson says her father wrapped her in āthe tightest hugā sheād ever received from him before tearfully telling her, āYou did it, kid. Iām beyond proud of you,ā words she says will be āforever... engravedā in her mind.

Papa Peteās emotions actually started well before Sophia took the stage. The 62-year-old retired concrete finisher says he was nervous from the moment they arrived because all he wanted was for his daughter to succeed.

āWhen Sophia walked up to sing, the entire place went quiet,ā he tells PEOPLE. āHer voice was like magic, to me and to everyone else. I cried tears of joy the entire performance.ā
That unforgettable performance also strengthened an already close father-daughter bond. Peterson calls her dad her ābest friend,ā adding that since hearing her sing, heās made sure everyone in his life knows about her talent and has become āgenuinely my biggest supporter.ā

The heartfelt exchange has struck a chord online, but for the Peterson family, the most meaningful part happened after the applause faded. What began as one daughterās leap of faith became a memory both father and daughter say theyāll carry with them for years to come.
Papa Pete hopes other families walk away from the moment with a simple reminder to encourage the people they love. āThe advice Iād give your children is follow your dreams until they become the reality,ā he says. āAnd share it with those close around you.ā
