It wasn’t the standing ovation or the quiet room that nearly unraveled Sophia Peterson. It was the moment she looked into the audience, saw her father wiping away tears as he heard her truly sing for the first time and realized she’d made him proud.

“I won’t lie, I sob every time I watch this back,” Peterson, 25, tells PEOPLE of the TikTok video that captured her father, Scott “Papa Pete” Peterson, overcome with emotion during her performance. “When I looked over at him on stage and saw a few tears, I almost couldn’t keep it together. There’s nothing like that feeling of knowing your parent is proud of you.”

The touching clip quickly resonated with viewers, showing Papa Pete sitting in the audience, visibly emotional as his daughter sang. While he’d heard the occasional belted tune during car rides when she was younger, Peterson says he’d never truly heard her perform before that day.

For Peterson, singing has always been part of who she is. She says it has been “a constant,” from harmonizing with her mom in the car as a child to spending hours singing alone in her room, which made finally sharing that part of herself with her dad feel especially nerve-racking.

The emotions only grew stronger once the performance ended. Peterson says her father wrapped her in “the tightest hug” she’d ever received from him before tearfully telling her, “You did it, kid. I’m beyond proud of you,” words she says will be “forever... engraved” in her mind.

Papa Pete’s emotions actually started well before Sophia took the stage. The 62-year-old retired concrete finisher says he was nervous from the moment they arrived because all he wanted was for his daughter to succeed.

“When Sophia walked up to sing, the entire place went quiet,” he tells PEOPLE. “Her voice was like magic, to me and to everyone else. I cried tears of joy the entire performance.”

That unforgettable performance also strengthened an already close father-daughter bond. Peterson calls her dad her “best friend,” adding that since hearing her sing, he’s made sure everyone in his life knows about her talent and has become “genuinely my biggest supporter.”
