The Ending of 'Emily in Paris' Season 5, Explained Netflix

It’s been five years since we were first introduced to the Parisian adventures of Midwest transplant Emily Cooper on Emily in Paris, but it’s safe to say we’re still invested in all that the Darren Star production has to offer.

The latest season of the Netflix hit, which premiered on the streamer this week, is surprisingly one of the series’s strongest installments yet. Emily’s wardrobe gets an upgrade thanks to a temporary relocation to Rome for Agence Grateau, a new Italian bachelor and fashion heir is sweeping her off her feet, and a few unexpected pairings (Mindy and Alfie, anyone!?) and the introduction of new characters (like Minnie Driver’s hilarious royal socialite “Princess Jane”) are helping keep the show as entertaining as ever.

Ahead, we‘ve recapped all that went down for Emily in Paris’s season five finale. Please note, major spoilers are ahead!

Who does Emily end up with?

Ah yes, the question we ask ourselves at the end of every season! At the start of season five, Emily is fully in romantic bliss with Marcello, her handsome Italian knitwear heir. And maybe, for the first time since the show first premiered in 2020, I was finally rooting with Emily to be with someone who wasn’t Chef Gabriel. Marcello’s mother Antonia wasn’t going to let her son run the family business and be happy, however. When one of Emily’s PR activations accidentally turns the family’s tiny Italian town of Solitano into an overnight TikTok tourist destination, Antonia is furious and fires Emily from handling PR for the brand. In addition to that, Emily soon realizes that Marcello was secretly scheming to sell Muratori to JVMA which would have eventually iced Emily out of the equation anyways. That didn’t fare well for Cooper! They take a break and for a good while, Emily seems laser focused on zoning in on her career and staying single.

Fast forward a few weeks and Marcello is in Paris for business discussions with Nicolas, another ousted fashion dynasty heir—but also, he wants to see what Emily is up to, as most men do. (He’s also working on starting his own sportswear line with Nico, that results in his mother suing him for misuse of the Muratori name until she sees his first runway presentation and is thoroughly impressed.) When Marcello and Emily come to an understanding and attempt their relationship again, all is well until he reveals he has no plans to permanently stay in Paris and that Solitano will always be home and where he plans to run his business. This, combined with a failed engagement attempt that had Emily convinced Marcello was about to propose (spoiler alert: the ring wasn’t for her), the two realize it’s best to call it quits.

While yes, one could argue Emily ends this season alone, there is some foreshadowing into what could come from a potential season six. There’s minimal Gabriel in this season due to him taking a job as a private yacht chef for a billionaire throughout the summer, but his mind always wanders back to Emily. When they meet in Paris for just a few hours (because Gabriel took a trip from the Mediterranean solely to pick up his chef knives? If you say so!) clearly sparks are flying, even while Gabriel admits that Emily should try to give Marcello another chance because they seem “good together.” By the final episode of season five however, when Gabriel’s new boss gives him a few weeks off in Greece before they once again set sail, he sends Emily a postcard, inviting her to join him in Greece. Here we go again.

Let’s cut to the chase: yes, Mindy and Alfie hook up in season five which was teased in the full trailer ahead of this week’s premiere. While Mindy realizes how messy it is to be fooling around with her best friend’s ex, she can't resist that quintessential Alfie charm. They try to tell themselves that nothing serious is going on and it’s just a summer fling, but when they ultimately decide to take things further and tell Emily about their relationship, Mindy chickens out. (It doesn’t help that her ex, Nicolas, has come to make good on their failed relationship this season, either.) While they break things off and Alfie doesn’t bother to hide his resentment of her reconciliation with Nicolas, there are still fleeting feelings between the two. (Emily does eventually find out about the two also—she’s rightfully mad for about two episodes until she realizes her best friend deserves to be happy. Needless to say, Emily is better than me.)

By the end of the season, Nicolas proposes to Mindy, which she accepts. When she flaunts the news to Alfie back in Paris and he tells her she’s making a massive mistake, reality begins to set in. Why did she say yes to Nico? Emily also senses the tension and bluntly asks her best friend if she still has feelings for Alfie. She doesn’t have a firm answer.

NetflixWhat’s going on with Agence Grateau?

While Sylvie attempted to start an Italian offshoot of Agence Grateau—mostly so she could indulge in an affair with an Italian director and former lover of hers—it’s a decision that didn’t end up faring well for the company. Emily fumbled Muratori’s business and Italian companies are wary of Sylvie’s team and their Parisian marketing prowess. By the season’s end, Sylvie is leaning towards closing the company altogether—until an angel investor steps in. Throughout the season, fans were treated to hilarious appearances from Princess Jane (portrayed by Minnie Driver) an old friend of Sylvie’s and a newly-inducted royal by marriage who is, in her own words, “Palazzo Poor.” When her husband passes and she’s left the castle in his will, she sells it off to a global hotel company and is now very, very rich—and also the newly announced equity partner of Agence Grataeu back in Paris.
