Jon Gries makes a surprise appearance on Fallout season 2

Goggins tells PEOPLE that his longtime friend was perfect for the role of Biff
While Prime Video teased that Fallout was adding Justin Theroux, Kumail Nanjiani and Macaulay Culkin to season 2, the streamer left one new addition as a surprise for viewers. In episode three of the newest installment of the apocalyptic series, Jon Gries unexpectedly appears opposite star Walton Goggins â making for a delightful White Lotus reunion.
Gries, 68, joins Fallout as Biff, a struggling New California Republic soldier, who the Ghoul (Goggins, 54) encounters on his way to the Legion's camp, where Lucy (Ella Purnell) has been taken. He's stationed at an abandoned outpost alongside Rodriguez (Barbara Eve Harris) who reveals to the bounty hunter that they haven't had contact with the NCR in over a decade.
Although the two characters' encounter is brief, it comes after both actors shared the screen as part of the season 3 cast of creator Mike White's hit HBO series. During the installment set in Thailand, Gries reprised his role as Greg Hunt, a former lover of Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge), while Goggins joined the show as Rick Hatchett, a grifter who was set on avenging his father's death.

While speaking to PEOPLE about season 2 of Fallout, Goggins and showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet discussed the unexpected Easter egg.
"I've known Jon for a long time, and there was an opportunity for someone of his type to participate in this story," the actor says of the Biff role. "Jon was just, like, the perfect person for it."
Echoing that sentiment, Robertson-Dworet adds, "He is the sweetest man and I think he really brought that to the role." The executive producer explains that "we actually cast Jon just because he is such a profoundly empathetic person." She adds, "You sort of adore him instantly, and that's what we needed for that role in the NCR."
"We were honored to have him," she continues.

For Goggins, it was also another opportunity to spend more time with his friend since filming of Fallout season 2 took place after the conclusion of The White Lotus, which was shot on location in Thailand.
"We got to spend some time out in the desert together," the actor says, joking that the dynamic on set was "very different" but "still hot."
As for season 2 as a whole, Goggins teases what the Ghoul's journey looks like as he continues to help Lucy on her path to New Vegas, saying that the two are on "this post-apocalyptic road trip."
"It really kind of begins exactly where we left off last season â but him seeing her as a human being for the first time," the actor says, explaining that he and Purnell, 29, "talked at length about the progress of their relationship and thought about the reality of two people walking for days and how that relationship evolves over time."
New episodes of Fallout season 2 debut Wednesdays on Prime Video until the finale on Feb. 4, 2026.
