Funeral set for Woodland Park crossing guard killed helping kids

NORTH ARLINGTON -- Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. May 11 at the Chapel Mausoleum of Holy Cross Cemetery for the school crossing guard killed by a car when she was helping children cross the road.

Jean M. Schultz, 80, of Woodland Park, was struck and killed around 3:30 p.m. May 4 while helping two children cross the McBride Avenue and Lackawanna Avenue intersection.

Schultz was taken to St. Joseph's University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. The two children were also taken to St. Joseph's, where they were reported in stable condition.

The unidentified driver remained at the scene, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.

A native of Lawrence, Massachusetts, Schultz resided most of her adult life in Kearny before moving to Woodland Park 20 years ago. She served as a crossing guard after retiring from work with The Bank of New York and Chase Bank.

"For many years, Jean served our community with care, warmth, and unwavering dedication," Woodland Park Mayor Tracy Kallert said in a Facebook statement. "She was a bright and reassuring presence for generations of children and families."

Schultz is survived by her son Richard Schultz Jr., her daughter Kara Suttora, four grandchildren and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Schultz. The mausoleum is at 340 Ridge Road, North Arlington.
