Giants release veteran WR Darius Slayton ahead of season opener vs. Cowboys

Darius Slayton’s run with the New York Giants is over.
The Giants released the wide receiver on Monday, just days before their season opener with the Dallas Cowboys. Slayton was the team’s longest-tenured player, getting ready to kick off his eighth campaign with the franchise.
The Giants selected Slayton in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Auburn, and he’s been a consistent piece of their offense ever since. He had 538 yards and was held to just a single touchdown last season, a career-low. He had two years left on a three-year, $36 million deal.

Slayton was on track to be a healthy scratch for the Giants’ game with the Cowboys, according to SNY’s Connor Hughes. The Giants reunited with former star Odell Beckham Jr. this past offseason, and the team is expecting Malik Nabers back after his ACL injury early last season in the near future, if not in time for Sunday night. Darnell Mooney and rookie Malachi Fields are expected to get significant time, too.
So with Slayton now released, the 29-year-old is free to land elsewhere and find playing time this season instead of fighting through a crowded wide receivers room in New York.
The Giants went just 4-13 last season and missed the playoffs for a third straight year. They’ve since hired John Harbaugh as their head coach after his split with the Baltimore Ravens. They’ll host the Cowboys on “Sunday Night Football” to kick off the 2026 campaign.
