Glen Powell tells PEOPLE he was most anxiously anticipating filming his kiss scene with Perry Mattfeld in the Chad Powers season 2 finale

The Hulu comedy is inspired by Eli Manning’s 2022 undercover walk-on football tryout at Penn State

“The stakes could not be higher,” Powell says. “This is a very intense season of television”

A lot is asked of Glen Powell to make Chad Powers come to life, but there was one specific day on the set of season 2 that had him the most nervous.

In the finale episode, Chad / Russ and Ricky (Perry Mattfeld) kiss after weeks of lingering romantic tension. For Powell, 37, it was the day he was most anxiously anticipating.

“I will just say that, because Perry and I are such good friends, I will say that is probably the most nervous I’ve been,” he tells PEOPLE. “Truly. I was like, ‘Oh, man.’”

As Mattfeld explains, the scene is “also a very intense emotional moment” for the characters, as Ricky has just taken a job at a different football team and her move is imminent — which is also likely why the kiss happened at all, since they were no longer going to be a coach and player.

“There’s a lot going on,” Powell says of the final scene of the season.

“I think it’s a long time coming, but it’s also — there’s heartbreak in it too. I think that’s why it’s emotional,” Mattfeld, 32, says.

In season 2, “the walls are closing in” on Powell’s titular character, who created a fake identity to play college football again after becoming a national embarrassment during his own career, and whose secret was exposed to Ricky at the end of season 1.

The series, which Powell co-created with Michael Waldron, is inspired by a 2022 Eli’s Places video, in which Eli Manning went undercover at Penn State Football’s walk-on tryouts. Both he and his brother, Peyton Manning, are also executive producers.

“Season 1 was such a big, wild swing that I think we hit a very, very small target, and it’s a show that’s really hard to pull off,” Powell says. “It was always ambitious, but I think on season 2, not only are we throwing more at this ensemble, comedically, emotionally — we’re really relying on the team as a superpower — but on the storytelling aspect [too].”

“The stakes could not be higher, and we’re really honoring that,” he continues. “This is a very intense season of television, and it’s tightly wound. And it’s funny, it’s dramatic, it’s heartfelt. I’m really proud of what we all did together. I think the show’s really settling into a gear that I think is super unique and super exciting.”
