Jane Fonda has a theory about Donald Trump’s actions and overall demeanor.

She spoke on the On with Kara Swisher podcast about her thoughts on the current political climate, specifically with Trump’s presidency. Jane admitted she often lies awake at night worrying about Trump’s motivations and next moves. While discussing this, she offered some psychological analysis from her perspective.

Jane Fonda is a very public critic of President Trump

Despite being one of the most vocal anti-Trump celebrities, Jane told the Vox media host she “would try to touch his heart.” She emphasized the need to understand his motivations in order to fully understand and gain mastery over his policies and actions.

She characterized Trump’s behavior as “the language of the traumatized,” and believed his early years could have shaped his current character. The Oscar-winner also mentioned she once knew Trump on a personal level. She revealed he once “really liked and admired” her former husband, CNN founder Ted Turner, before his Presidential bid.

She expressed empathy with the President, describing him as a “wounded person.” Although not detailed by Jane specifically, Trump’s relationship with his father, Fred Trump, has been much theorized about. The German-American, who died in 1999, has often been characterized as unaffectionate and an intimidating figure.

Jane takes a more sympathetic outlook towards Trump compared to many fellow liberals. However, she admitted, “I don’t think I’d succeed” in being able to influence his mindset more positively.

The 88-year-old has been politically active since the 1960s. In her early career, she supported the Civil Rights Movement and provided support to the Black Panthers. Her anti-Vietnam War activism in the 1970s led her to be labelled “Hanoi Jane” by conservative critics. During Trump’s presidency, Jane has been arrested for protesting on four separate occasions. The arrests were made over four consecutive weeks, protesting climate change alongside Oil Change International.
