John Stamos is opening up about his late friend Bob Saget and how they developed their tight-knit bond on *Full House*.

During a recent appearance on Bobby Bones’ *BobbyCast* podcast, Stamos admitted he and Saget didn’t initially get along when they were cast as brothers-in-law Jesse Katsopolis and Danny Tanner on *Full House* in 1987.

Stamos didn’t like how, as stand-up comedians, Saget and their costar Dave Coulier only seemed to care about making the crew laugh.

ā€œI was coming from, I just did a show with Jack Klugman, who’s a famous sitcom guy, and so I was coming to [*Full House*] with more of an actor’s point of view of these scenes and trying to work these scenes,ā€ Stamos told Bones. ā€œAnd the guys were just trying to make the guys, the crew, laugh and whatever that was about.ā€

Stamos noted that Saget was ā€œespeciallyā€ distracting on set. But when tragedy struck all their families, the trio learned that they had more in common than they originally thought.

ā€œWe didn’t get along at all for the first couple of years,ā€ Stamos explained. ā€œAnd then I think it was maybe the third or fourth, something like that, season [and] Bob’s sister got scleroderma —which he spent the rest of his life advocating raising money for this horrific disease —Dave’s sister got cancer, and my sister had gotten diagnosed with a brain tumor. And so all of a sudden we weren’t three guys on a show, we were three brothers grieving, you know, our sisters.ā€

Sadly, Saget and Coulier lost their sisters, while Stamos’ sibling survived. Their shared heartbreak turned into a lasting brotherhood.

ā€œWe became really close then, and then we just started to, you know, realized that there was a lot to learn from each other, I think, and I had a lot to learn. I learned a lot from those guys,ā€ Stamos insisted.

He added that Saget, who died in 2022 after a fall, became his best friend.

ā€œWe were just there for each other through every, you know, all the ups and downs of life, divorces, marriages,ā€ Stamos said. ā€œBut I just loved him so dearly, and it was such a tragic loss. Just one day, just in a blink of an eye, he was gone.ā€

He noted that Saget was ā€œbombastic with his loveā€ and would text him constantly and then call to make sure he received the texts. He misses those messages.

ā€œHe was that kind of guy,ā€ Stamos told Bones. ā€œJust losing him has been a real, you know, life has just been a little not as funny.ā€

Coulier has faced his own health battle after being diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2024 and p16 squamous carcinoma (a head-and-neck cancer at the base of his tongue) in 2025. He is now in remission.

ā€œDave and I talk a lot,ā€ Stamos told *Us Weekly* last year. ā€œYou know, we lost Bob, and I couldn’t bear losing Dave, so I’ve been with him a lot during this cancer journey of his.ā€

He added of Coulier, who played Danny’s best friend Joey Gladstone on *Full House*, ā€œIt’s great to see that the treatments work. And it’s great to see him out there talking about it, to help other people that are going through the same thing.ā€
