On March 12, 2026, Kyla Pratt attended the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards in Los Angeles
The carpet was filled with stars like Pratt, Zendaya, Michael B. Jordan and Teyana Taylor
During the event, Pratt spoke to PEOPLE about her experience re-watching One on One with her daughters
For many fans, Kyla Pratt will always be remembered as the quick-witted Breanna Barnes from the early-2000s sitcom One on One.
Now a mother herself, Pratt has been able to revisit the series from a completely different perspective while watching it alongside her own daughters, Lyric and Liyah. At the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards, Pratt chatted with PEOPLE about what it was like to introduce the show to them.
“What's crazy is that when One on One was on Netflix during the pandemic, I was like, ‘Oh...this is so great. My kids can watch it,’ and this was like a while ago, so my kids were younger then,” Pratt recalls.

But what seemed like a fun family watch quickly turned into a slightly awkward experience for the now 39-year-old actress. Rewatching some episodes reminded Pratt that the show occasionally pushed into more mature territory than she remembered.
The beloved comedy, which aired from 2001 to 2006, followed a teenage girl navigating life with her single father, played by Flex Alexander, after moving in with him in Baltimore.
Sitting beside her daughters during certain moments made her squirm as scenes she once laughed through as a young performer took on new meaning from a parent’s point of view.
“To see this subject matter, I was like, ‘Wait, wait. They're going to watch this?’” Pratt recalls.

“For me, it was funny as a team doing the little scenes where we might be getting a little freaky or whatever,” she says, noting that at the time she found those moments humorous, especially since some of her castmates felt "nervous and scared" filming them.
Watching those same scenes years later with her daughters, however, gave her a very different perspective. “I'm a mom that's like, ‘Ask me questions. I prefer you to ask me questions than to go ask your friends, because they don't know what they talk about,’” Pratt adds, explaining that she tries to keep her composure while watching so the moment could remain open and comfortable for conversation.
Still, Pratt says her daughters, whom she refers to as her “twins," have seen plenty of her work over the years. “They watched The Proud Family,” she reveals. “They've watched everything that I've been a part of, but now I be like, ‘Don't watch that.’ "

Pratt shares her girls with longtime partner, songwriter and tattoo artist Danny Kirkpatrick. The pair were first linked around 2008.
During the Essence event, the Dr. Dolittle actress also spoke to PEOPLE about the importance of instilling confidence and identity into her children by building them up every day and reminding them of their beauty inside and out.
“You are everything, and there's so many things in society that are trying to make you think that you're not, whether it's hair or makeup or the shape of your face or the way that you're built,” Pratt emphasizes. “All of that is just to bring you down, because they know that you're everything, so for my daughters, I'm reminding them every day, and luckily they have a great father who reminds them every day as well like, ‘Baby, you are it, and you can do anything you put your mind to.’ "
