Lanterns just made Green Lantern‘s power ring completely useless in the most unexpected way. HBO’s latest episode introduces a devastating new weakness straight from the comics that changes everything for the Corps.

Lanterns displays how a Green Lantern can be beaten

HBO’s Lanterns Episode 4 introduces a new weakness for the Green Lantern Corps that differs from the comics’ traditional vulnerability. The episode reveals that bullets imbued with “darkness” can nullify the power ring’s abilities. This replaces the long-standing comic book weakness to the color yellow with something more grounded.

John Stewart and Hal Jordan discover the weakness during a key sequence in the episode. The two Green Lanterns infiltrate Will Macon’s compound and find an advanced weapons cache. The guns inside shoot darkness at them and were specifically designed to counter Green Lanterns.

The concept draws directly from DC Comics’ established lore around the Black Lantern Corps. Writer Geoff Johns and artist Ethan Van Sciver first introduced the Black Lantern Corps in 2008’s Green Lantern #25. Black Lantern Rings use black as the absence of color to fall outside the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum.

This positioning outside the spectrum allows Black Lantern Rings to nullify every other power ring. The original yellow weakness existed for decades before Johns explained it through the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum. That spectrum introduced multiple corps, from the Yellow Lantern Corps weaponizing fear, to the Indigo Lanterns using compassion.

The show has so far leaned more into a True Detective tone than traditional Green Lantern storytelling. It has mostly avoided the more fantastical elements of the Green Lantern universe throughout its run. The series references other Lanterns rather than showing them and pokes fun at Hal Jordan’s suit.

However, the show remains unafraid to include deep-cut references from the source material. The darkness weakness serves as a clever alternative that fits the grounded tone better than a vulnerability to yellow.
