Matt Lucas Reveals He Is Autistic, Explains Why He Needs Days Without Seeing Anyone

Matt Lucas has publicly shared for the first time that he is autistic, describing how he balances highly social periods onstage with days when he prefers to be alone.

The 52-year-old comedian and actor made the disclosure during a conversation with Romesh Ranganathan on BBC Radio 2. “I've never, ever spoken about this publicly, but I'm autistic,” Lucas said as they discussed the different rhythms of performing and writing.

Lucas said he enjoys the company and activity that come with theater, but he also values stretches of solitude when he can write by himself. On his day away from a six day production schedule, he said he generally rests his voice and avoids making social plans.

He did not say when he learned he was autistic or discuss any assessment or diagnostic process. His comments stayed focused on his own working routine, just weeks before he begins a limited West End engagement as Fagin in Oliver!.

Lucas Says His Day Off Is for Recharging

Ranganathan asked whether Lucas felt he needed to recharge between his social and solitary periods. Lucas agreed and used his theater schedule as an example.

He said that on his one day away from performing, he rests and rests his voice, then generally chooses not to see anyone. Lucas joked that the arrangement also gives other people “a break from me,” before saying the recharge time is important to him.

The exchange appears in a clip shared by BBC Radio 2. Lucas did not present being alone as something he disliked. He described both theater and solitary writing as parts of his life that he enjoys.

His Quieter Days Also Give Him Time to Write

Lucas said he is currently working on his third novel, which will be his first aimed at adults. His first two novels were written for younger readers.

His debut children's novel, The Boy Who Slept Through Christmas, arrived in 2023. He followed it with BobLand, published in hardback in November 2025, about a boy who decides to build his own theme park after being banned from the one next door.

Lucas said the third book has taken considerable work and that he already knows what he would like his fourth novel to be. He did not announce a title or publication date for the adult book during the Radio 2 conversation.

Lucas Starts as Fagin on September 22

Lucas will next take over the role of Fagin in Oliver! at London's Gielgud Theatre. The production's official website confirms that his six week engagement begins September 22.

Playing Fagin fulfills a longtime ambition. Lucas has said Oliver! was the first West End musical he saw, when he was 6, and that he had always wanted to appear in the show. His recent stage work also includes another run as Thénardier in Les Misérables: The Arena Concert Spectacular.

Lucas also told Ranganathan that he would someday like to play Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. Neither is an announced production commitment. His confirmed run as Fagin continues through November 1, with Simon Lipkin returning to the role on November 3.
