Michael Keaton and Morgan Freeman are teaming up for a new Western thriller. The project marks their first time sharing the screen in nearly four decades, following their appearance together in the 1988 drama Clean and Sober. Keaton will also direct the film, which is written by R. Dean McCreary.

According to Deadline, Rode to Ruin has been acquired by Angel, which will handle its worldwide rights. The company will launch international presales ahead of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) market. The film is currently set for a 2027 release, although an exact release date has not been announced.

The project also marks the launch of Angel’s international sales arm. The company will introduce Rode to Ruin to international buyers at TIFF Market ahead of its planned 2027 release. Production has yet to begin.

Rode to Ruin follows retired U.S. Marshal Henry Tillman, played by Keaton. He spends four decades tracking down the person who killed his wife. His investigation eventually leads him to Joseph Mulberry, played by Freeman, an aging outlaw who is losing his memory.

Tillman’s search takes an unexpected turn when he uncovers a buried truth that could threaten both men. The Western thriller explores themes of revenge, forgiveness, redemption, and the consequences of past choices.

The film reunites Keaton and Freeman nearly 40 years after Clean and Sober. Keaton previously directed Knox Goes Away and The Merry Gentleman, while Freeman has also appeared in notable Westerns, including Unforgiven.

Keaton is also serving as the producer alongside Lori McCreary, Kelly Mendelsohn, and Gary Lucchesi. The film comes from McCreary and Freeman’s Revelations Entertainment and Keaton’s George & Leona Productions.

While an exact release date has not been revealed, the 2027 release window gives audiences an idea of when they can expect Keaton and Freeman’s next collaboration. The upcoming TIFF market could provide more details about the film’s international sales and release plans.
