Nathan Fielder’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary hailed as ‘transfixing’ in first reactions after top secret premiere

A new documentary about Theranos founder and convicted fraudster Elizabeth Holmes has been hailed as “insane,” “brilliant” and “transfixing” by early viewers who attended a top-secret premiere.

You Can See Everything, filmed across April and May 2023, follows Canadian comedian Nathan Fielder, Some Kind of Heaven director Lance Oppenheim, and a film crew as they track Holmes 34 days before she’s sent to prison on multiple counts of defrauding investors and committing wire fraud through her blood-testing startup.

The A24 docudrama had a surprise premiere at the Telluride Film Festival Sunday, and various festivalgoers have expressed a mixture of amazement, shock and confusion after watching it.

In an early review for Variety, Owen Gleiberman said that “the sensation of ‘WTF? I’ve got to watch this!’ did not subside as the movie went on. It only intensified.”

Gleiberman remarked that the three-hour film isn’t a pure documentary but a “one-of-a-kind reality-TV-as-hangout-movie psychodrama circus.”

The review continues: “The Elizabeth Holmes we see has a winsome soft presence, with a Cupid’s-bow grin and eyes that beam without blinking too much.”

“You Can See Everything overlaps reality, performance, deception, and mental illness, to the point that it brings you to the enigmatic space where all those things meet.”

Deadline’s Pete Hammond remarks that because the documentary-makers go into Holmes’s San Diego home, where she lived with her boyfriend and father of her two children, Billy Evans, the documentary is “unlike anything I have ever seen in terms of access.”

“Fielder immerses himself in this weird world as someone she comes to trust, much to his astonishment, becoming so close she asks him along on that last drive to prison,” writes Hammond.

Other viewers shared their opinions on X, with the account @NextBestPicture writing: “What the f*** did I just watch? One of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen.”

They continued: “Shocking, expansive, and revealing, depending on what you choose to believe. At 174 minutes, it never lags, but it certainly lingers, leaving behind haunting revelations and disturbing moral contradictions that I’m still trying to wrap my head around.”

@MovieMantz called it a “gripping, riveting, offbeat, existential, fascinating, unexpectedly hilarious & revealing (I think?) film that you cannot take your eyes off of!”

@howatdk said it was “maybe the most hysterical, shocking, insane documentary I’ve ever seen,” adding: “A work of genius.”

Another early viewer, @nrdgrn, wrote: “It turns from an uneasy as hell doc into something structurally, stylistically, and formally even more shocking. Like nothing I’ve ever seen.”

The official logline reads: “Thirty-four days before she’s sent to prison, notorious Silicon Valley founder Elizabeth Holmes invites a skeptical film crew to document her every move.”

Holmes was convicted in January 2022 on four counts of fraud and conspiracy for lying about the capabilities of her biotech company’s blood testing technology and conning investors, who included Rupert Murdoch and Larry Ellison, out of millions of dollars. Holmes began serving her 11-year sentence in May 2023 at a federal prison in Texas.

Her listed release date at the Federal Bureau of Prisons is currently March 19, 2032.

A teaser trailer for the new documentary, released Monday, shows Nathan For You star Fielder quizzing Holmes while staring into her eyes.

“I don’t have anything to deceive you on,” Holmes tells him. “Of course I’m not deceiving you. I’m engaging with you as a human being. Why would I deceive you? There’s no reason for me to do that.”

“OK. Alright. OK, good chat,” Fielder says, before adding, “You’re being real right now?”

“I’m alwaysbeing real,” she replies.

You Can See Everything will release theatrically in October.
