Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are sending positive thoughts to teammate Tyquan Thornton after the Chiefs wide receiver suffered a serious ankle injury during Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Oct. 4.
Thornton, 26, had just hauled in a 55-yard catch from Mahomes late in the fourth quarter and was tackled on the five-yard line, but when he went to stand to celebrate, he collapsed on the field at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
The fifth-year starter out of Baylor University — who was having the best game of his career — was carted off the field after trainers put his left ankle in an aircast.
The scene had Mahomes, 31, and others looking on in shock at the gruesome injury.
“It’s tough, those guys, they put in so much work,” Mahomes said after the game. “I was in that spot last year. Everybody puts in so much work to be out there and to play the game they love. One play can change your season.”
Chiefs officials later said Thornton dislocated his ankle in the team’s 30-27 win over the Raiders.

He traveled back to Kansas City with the team and is set to undergo more testing on Monday, Oct. 5, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
On Instagram about six hours after his injury, Thornton did not directly refer to what transpired on the field, but offered a motivational quote from Martin Luther King Jr. alongside a carousel of highlights from the Week 4 clash, when he scored two touchdowns and racked up 111 yards on five receptions.

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step! 🕺🏽🙏🏾” he wrote.
Kelce, who turned 37 on Monday, waxed optimistic in the comments after the win over the previously undefeated Raiders.
“All we make is big plays!!!! 🔥🔥” he wrote.
The tight game ended with the Chiefs on top, despite the team losing their other star wide receiver, Rashee Rice, earlier in the game to a hamstring injury.
Mahomes — who returned to the lineup to start the season, less than a year after suffering a torn ACL and LCL — knows what it’s like to be in Thornton’s shoes.

“For him, he’s put in all the time and all the work and had a tough play there,” the quarterback said about Thornton. “You hope for the best, but at the same time, you want to show him support. I know how it is when you’re in that position. It’s like the world’s closing in on you, and you want to make sure you have the support from your teammates there.”
