Patrick Stewart’s son has shared a photo with his late dad following the actor’s death.

Following the news of his death at age 86 on Wednesday, Oct. 29, the prolific English actor’s son Daniel, 59, shared a post to X featuring a single throwback image of himself giving his father a piggyback ride. In the picture, they both looked up and away into the distance as Stewart held on to his eldest child, who smiled. The photo was taken during a 2001 production of Johnson Over Jordan at the West Yorkshire Playhouse (now known as Leeds Playhouse) in Leeds, England.

“Daniel, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. He was loved and admired by so many people. I wish the best for you and your family as you grieve,” one person commented.

Stewart was also a father to daughter Sophie Alexandra Stewart, 54.

Stewart, who famously portrayed Captain Picard in the Star Trek franchise and Professor X in the X-Men films, welcomed his two children with his first wife Sheila Falconer, whom he married in 1966. The couple split in 1990, and Stewart remarried twice, first to Wendy Neuss from 2000 to 2003, and then to his current wife, Sunny Ozell, whom he wed in 2013.

During his 2023 interview with Irish Independent, Stewart shared that he had “significant grief” over his separation from his two kids.

“Given that I’m separated from my children now — we don’t have relationships — they have become very important,” he told the outlet at the time. “I never thought this would happen, but both my children are in their 50s — they’re not children anymore, they’re adults. And my relationship with them is practically non-existent.”

The actor shared that “not a day goes by” that he isn’t “pained by the memory of my children, who they were and by a sense of responsibility that they became who they are in part because of me and my influence or lack of influence on them.”

Asked why he had a strained relationship with his kids, he said, “I always put my acting work first, before my family.”

“I could’ve done better as a parent, when my kids were little. I was just obsessed with my work and everything else took second place,” continued Stewart. “I’m trying to correct that now whenever possible with my grandchildren. And my own children seem to have forgiven me.”

Similar to his father, Daniel is also an actor. Based out of England, he has been in plays on both sides of the pond and has worked with Patrick on three projects: the 1993 thriller Death Train, the 2015 Starz sitcom Blunt Talk and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

“I think it’s a great thing that we’re both in the same profession,” Stewart told USA Today in 2015. “It has brought so much into both our lives that we can share and enjoy talking about. It’s terrific.”

Stewart’s daughter Sophie leads a more private life than her parents and brother, but she has made a handful of red carpet appearances over the years. She joined her dad, as well as Daniel and Stewart’s then-girlfriend Neuss, at the 44th Annual Drama Desk Awards in N.Y.C. in 1999, and she was her dad’s date to the 2003 premiere of 2 Fast 2 Furious and the 2009 Laurence Olivier Awards, both in London. She and her husband, Wayne, also turned out for the premiere of Star Trek: Nemesis in London in 2002.

Sophie and Daniel were the ones who both encouraged and “teased” the late actor about his initial Star Trek audition, saying that after he got the role, he thought “they were quite proud that Dad was captain Jean-Luc Picard.”

“They thought it was hysterical that I was even auditioning,” the famed actor told PEOPLE in 2022. “They told me, ‘Dad, we used to watch [the original] every night!’ I said, ‘The guys wearing the colored T-shirts?’ That was all I knew about it.”

Kelly Bush Nova, a longtime spokesperson for Stewart, announced news of his death on Thursday, Oct. 29, in a statement shared with PEOPLE. “We announce with great sorrow the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart yesterday at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny, following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.”

“He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter, and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all,” the statement continued. “We will forever cherish the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace.”
