Rachael Stirling recently made a confession about her late mother and legendary actress Diana Rigg. The theatre artist revealed that she tends to eat “a grain or two” of her mother’s ashes before going for a stage performance. While Stirling admitted that this revelation might be a little macabre for the others, this helps her remain close to her mother’s memory.

Stirling lost her mother on Sept. 10, 2020, following a cancer diagnosis at the age of 82. The late actress had left a lasting mark on the film industry with her performances in The Avengers, The Assassination Bureau, The Hospital and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service where she played the “Bond Girl.” One of her last iconic roles was that of Lady Olenna Tyrell in Game Of Thrones.

Rachael Stirling Recalls Her Relationship With Her Mother in Her Memoir

In her memoir, All About My Mother which will hit the shelves on Sept. 10, 2026, and mark the sixth death anniversary of Rigg, Rachael Stirling offered insight into her close relationship with her late mother.

According to a news report in the Telegraph, the Detectorists star revealed in her memoir that she consumes a grain or two of her mother’s ashes before the first night of a new play.

She stated, “Although it shocks people when I tell them. It feels absolutely natural to me. I am cloaked in her, shielded and shrouded by her. My mother is my superpower.”

According to reports, consuming cremated remains can be harmful to the body because of the possible accumulation of toxins from chemicals and toxic metals from the cremation process.

Reportedly, Diana Rigg had initially kept the news of her cancer diagnosis hidden from her daughter in March 2020. Sterling was busy in the professional sphere and was starring in Mike Bartlett directorial Love Love Love. However, Stirling eventually learned the news as her mother’s health deteriorated.

Stirling Recalls a Heartfelt Incident Involving Rigg During Her Last Days

Recalling the tumultuous phase in her life surrounding her mother’s last days, The Bletchley Circle actress mentioned in her memoir, “They lost Mama’s name on the system at one juncture during Covid. I was asking: ‘Where the f*** is my mother?”

Stirling further added how she had found her ailing mother in a hospital bed, where she had not eaten anything because she was unable to open a box of yogurt, which was the only thing Rigg wanted to eat.

Rachael Stirling said, “I found her eventually. I basically had to break into the hospital. She was in a room on her own. She couldn’t get out of bed. The only thing she wanted to eat was this yogurt, but she couldn’t open it, and nobody had helped her, so she hadn’t eaten anything.”

The Dorothy Loudon Award recipient mentioned that the incident led her to waste no time to take her mother home. Diana Rigg passed away six months after her diagnosis.

Back then, in an emotional statement, Rachael Stirling had said, “My Beloved Ma died peacefully in her sleep early this morning, at home, surrounded by family. I will miss her beyond words. She spent her last months joyfully reflecting on her extraordinary life, full of love, laughter and a deep pride in her profession.”
