A recent WWE release reportedly caught talent at the company’s Performance Center completely off guard.
WWE’s recent round of talent cuts has affected several performers across the company, including names who had been working through the NXT and Evolve systems.
Wendy Choo’s departure came as a major surprise to those within the developmental system. A new report shed light on the reaction to her exit.
Choo, 34, whose real name is Karen Yu, originally joined WWE’s developmental system after making her debut as Karen Q in the 2018 Mae Young Classic. She signed with WWE in February 2019. She later adopted the Mei Ying character as part of the Tian Sha stable in 2020.
The Mei Ying character was dropped the following year, with Yu eventually being repackaged as Wendy Choo. She went on to become the WWE Evolve Women’s Champion, adding another accolade to her WWE résumé.

Wendy Choo’s WWE release reportedly surprised performance center talent
According to Figure Four Weekly’s Bryan Alvarez, Choo’s departure came as a surprise to talent at the WWE Performance Center.
“Apparently the whole PC was shocked that Wendy Choo was released,” Alvarez wrote in a post for his subscribers.
Choo’s most recent match came at the August 25 NXT taping at the WWE Performance Center, where she lost a dark match to Karmen Petrovic. She had also competed in a match taped for WWE Main Event on August 17, losing to Maxxine Dupri.
The former Evolve Women’s Champion also made a recent appearance for TNA Wrestling. Choo wrestled at TNA’s July 30 tapings at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, where she challenged Xia Brookside for the TNA Knockouts World Championship. The match later aired on the August 6 episode of TNA iMPACT, with Brookside retaining the title.
