Late actor Rob Reiner has officially won a posthumous award at the 78th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which came nine months after his tragic death.
Reiner won the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series award for his role on FX’s The Bear during Night 2 of the Emmy Awards. He prevailed over Michael J. Fox and Brett Goldstein for Shrinking, Hamish Linklater for Widow’s Bay, Christopher McDonald for Hacks and Connor Storrie for Saturday Night Live.
The award marked a posthumous honor for Reiner, who died at 78 after being killed alongside his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in December. It also marked the first posthumous Emmy for an on-camera performance since Raúl Julia won for The Burning Season in 1995. This comes after his son, Jake, opened up about the 'surreal' moment after his parents death.

Presenter Wendi McLendon-Covey accepted the Emmy on Reiner’s behalf, with the audience giving the late actor and filmmaker a minute-long standing ovation. "It’s appropriate to stand for this one,” McLendon-Covey said to the crowd, who gave the win a standing ovation. “I know we all wish Rob could be here tonight.”
The win also made Emmy history and rewrote a record previously held by Reiner’s own father, Carl Reiner.

Rob Reiner had not won an Emmy since 1978, when he took home his second consecutive Supporting Actor trophy for the classic sitcom All in the Family. His latest win came 48 years after that victory, setting a new record for the longest gap between acting Emmy wins.
The previous record belonged to Carl Reiner, who went from winning an Emmy for Caesar’s Hour in 1958 to taking home a guest comedy Emmy for Mad About You in 1995, a span of 37 years.
The elder Reiner had set the record in the guest comedy category, and his son now broke it in that same category nearly five decades after his previous acting Emmy.
Reiner was remembered across the entertainment industry for his work as both an actor and filmmaker. His directing credits included such classics as This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally and A Few Good Men.

He was also honored during the In Memoriam segment at the 2026 Oscars. His guest appearance on The Bear was one of his final screen performances.
This year’s Emmy nominations were led by The Pitt, which received 25 nominations. Hacks, Widow’s Bay and Beef also ranked among the leading nominees.
An edited version of the first two nights of the Emmys will air on FXX on Saturday, September 12, at 8 p.m. ET. The live 78th Emmy Awards ceremony will follow Monday, September 4, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and stream on Peacock from the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live. Mariska Hargitay is set to host.
