A 1991 telethon video of Jason Alexander singing show tunes is going viral, impressing fans with his vocal talent

Fans praise his versatility, noting his Broadway career was overshadowed by his success on Seinfeld

Alexander’s Broadway roots include a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for Jerome Robbins’ Broadway in 1989

Before he made a name for himself on television as George Costanza on Seinfeld, Jason Alexander found his roots in Broadway — and a resurfaced performance is causing fans to do a double-take.

A video of Alexander singing “I Want To Sing A Show Tune” and “This Is The Moment” on stage at the 1991 Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon is going viral, with fans declaring the actor has a “very solid vibrato.”

“I’m sorry - WHAT,” wrote a social media user beneath an Instagram video of Alexander’s performance.

Alexander, now 66, has a history performing show tunes, as he originated the role of Joe in Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along in 1981 and starred in 1984’s The Rink in 1984. The actor even won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for Jerome Robbins’ Broadway in 1989.

Alexander’s most well-known role, however, came on Seinfeld, which premiered in 1989 and was co-created by Larry David. The show famously became known as a “show about nothing,” focusing on the daily lives of a group of friends in Manhattan, centered around Jerry Seinfeld — a character that’s just a slightly fictionalized version of Seinfeld himself — and his friends Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), George (Alexander) and Kramer (Michael Richards).

Alexander has opened up about the other actors who were considered for the role that shot him to fame, sharing in an episode of his podcast, Really? no, Really?, that he and actor Larry Miller auditioned at the same time, and he initially thought Miller would get the part because of his friendship with the show’s star, Jerry Seinfeld.

“I know some of the people that they either offered the role to or —“ Alexander said. “So, I know about Chris Rock. I know about Danny DeVito. I know about Paul Schaefer. And I know about, um, Rosie O’Donnell.”
