Rob Reiner is being mourned by Hollywood after he and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Los Angeles home.
At around 3:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, Dec. 14, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) was called to a home in Brentwood to provide medical aid. First responders arriving at the home said they found a man and woman dead — and the victims were later identified as Rob, 78, and Michele, 68.
According to multiple sources who have spoken with family members, Rob and Michele were killed by their son, Nick, although police have not confirmed that account. As previously reported by PEOPLE, Nick is alive and being questioned, though no arrests have been made and Nick has not been named as a suspect. The couple were first found by their daughter, Romy, 28, sources told PEOPLE.
Following the news of the couple's deaths, celebrities who worked closely with Rob paid tribute to the director and his wife, who was a film producer, and shared their shock.
Jamie Lee Curtis and her husband, Christopher Guest — who starred in This Is Spinal Tap, which was Rob's directorial debut, and The Princess Bride — released a joint statement.
“Christopher and I are numb and sad and shocked about the violent, tragic deaths of our dear friends Rob and Michele Singer Reiner and our ONLY focus and care right now is for their children and immediate families and we will offer all support possible to help them,” Curtis, 67, said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

Curtis, who starred in sitcom New Girl alongside Rob, continued, "There will be plenty of time later to discuss the creative lives we shared and the great political and social impact they both had on the entertainment industry, early childhood development, the fight for gay marriage and their global care for a world in crisis. We have lost great friends. Please give us time to grieve.”
Having won an Oscar for her role in Rob’s 1990 movie Misery, Kathy Bates remembered him as a “brilliant” artist who “changed the course of her life” in a statement shared with NBC News.

"I’m horrified hearing this terrible news. Absolutely devastated. I loved Rob," Bates, 77, who also starred in 1998’s Primary Colors alongside Rob, told the outlet. "He was brilliant and kind, a man who made films of every genre to challenge himself as an artist. He also fought courageously for his political beliefs. He changed the course of my life.”
Bates also praised Michele and described her as a “gifted photographer," per the outlet.

The family of the late All in the Family creator Norman Lear told The Hollywood Reporter that they were “devastated” by Rob and Michele’s deaths.
“Norman often referred to Rob as a son, and their close relationship was extraordinary, to us and the world,” the family told the outlet. “Norman would have wanted to remind us that Rob and Michele spent every breath trying to make this country a better place, and they pursued that through their art, their activism, their philanthropy, and their love for family and friends."
Norman's wife, Lyn Lear, had remained very close to the Reiners, according to the outlet. "The world is unmistakably darker tonight, and we are left bereft," Lyn said.
