- Noah Wyle shares how *The Pitt* season 3 will be markedly different from previous installments, beyond the announced cast shake-ups.

- “That was a decision made because there’s going to be a lot of anticipation and fear and preparation going into January,” the Emmy winner teases of the highly anticipated third season.

- Production for season 3 began in June.

Season 3 of *The Pitt* is already gearing up to be pretty different from what fans have come to expect.

Aside from the previously announced cast changes that will have Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center looking different than it did during season 2, star Noah Wyle is teasing how the upcoming installment, which started production in June, will also differ thanks to the time its set in compared to when the season airs.

“Up until now, we’ve plotted our show almost in real time when people are watching,” Wyle explained in an interview with Deadline published Wednesday. “We’ve written the shows eight months before we air, but we’ve written them to take place in the time and place in which they are being watched this season. We didn’t do that this season. What we’re depicting is Thursday, November 12, 2026, and it will be aired in January of 2027.”

The first two seasons were set on a day in the future of the year the show aired.

Wyle and showrunner R. Scott Gemmill have previously stated that the third season will take place on a day in November without specifying which until now — just a few months after season 2 was set on the Fourth of July. The actor shares that the date is much more significant than one might think.

“We will be talking about where we’ve just been for the first time, and not where we’re going,” he noted. “That was a decision made because there’s going to be a lot of anticipation and fear and preparation going into January and the execution of the Big Beautiful Bill that will have a lot of ramifications in Americans’ lives.”

The desire was to explore on the tumultuous feelings heading into the end of the year, feelings that can be especially poignant within the chaos of the trauma center. ”We wanted to focus on what those last couple of months of the year are going to be like and what most people are going to have to do to prepare themselves for a very harsh reality in the next seven to eight years, to underscore the point of how desperate this particular moment in time is,” Wyle added.

The characters of *The Pitt *have become old hands at navigating harsh realities as they attempt to save the lives of all who wander into the fictional emergency room, but it’ll be especially daunting to watch as they do so following the climactic season 2 finale*.*

Season 2 ended not just with a cliffhanger for Dr. Robby (Wyle) and baby Jane Doe — an abandoned infant Katherine LaNasa‘s charge nurse Dana Evans rescues early in season 2 who becomes a fixture of the chaotic emergency room setting — but for Supriya Ganesh’s Dr. Samira Mohan, who was caught in her own downward mental health spiral throughout the season.

Ahead of the end of season 2, news broke that Ganesh would not return for season 3, so fans were disappointed but not quite surprised, considering the character spent most of the season questioning her capabilities in the ED and weighed alternate paths forward in her medical career.

“That was something that was just always spoken about when we were filming, just that there’s characters that are gonna come and go,” Ganesh told EW of the nature of the show. “Noah would joke around and laugh and go like, ‘Who am I gonna get rid of this season?’ as a joke, so it just was very much something that was just part of how they structured the show.”

She continued, “I think the idea of living in a day is super helpful because eventually the character doesn’t know what’s gonna happen to her or the show really also at times doesn’t really know what’s gonna happen to her at any point. I think it’s just, like, you have to live within the context of a day.”

Meanwhile, Sepidah Moafi has already revealed that she will be absent from the season premiere, while Shabana Azeez shared that her character, Victoria Javadi, will no longer be a part of the regular ED rotation, having chosen to focus on emergency psychiatry in the season 2 finale.

Other returning cast members includes Ayesha Harris (now a series regular after previously recurring as part of the night shift), Katherine LaNasa, Fiona Dourif, Patrick Ball, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, Taylor Dearden, and Shawn Hatosy.

*The Pitt* received 25 Emmy nominations on Wednesday—the highest for any show this year —including for Wyle, Dearden, Dourif, LaNasa, Moafi, Ball, Hatosy, and Howell. Other nominations included Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.

Fans can find out what the show will take home when the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Emmy winner Mariska Hargitay, air live on Monday, Sept. 14, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC and streaming on Peacock.
