Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya are one step closer to delivering an “epic conclusion” in the new Dune: Part Three trailer.
In the latest trailer for the third and final part in the epic sci-fi series, released on Wednesday, July 8, Chalamet’s Paul Atreides grapples with the fact that he is “way beyond redemption” after conquering the galaxy and destroying thousands of worlds.
Inspired by author Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel Dune Messiah, writer-director Denis Villeneuve follows Paul as he reckons with the outcomes of his decisions in 2024’s Dune: Part Two, 17 years after he becomes emperor of the known universe.
Zendaya’s Chani, a warrior of the Fremen people on the planet Arrakis and a lover to Paul, finds herself at one end of a complex love triangle between herself, Paul and Florence Pugh as Paul’s wife Princess Irulan, daughter of the dethroned emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken).
“I trusted you,” Chani says as she emotionally pushes Paul, as seen in the trailer. “You promised me that you would never take power in your name. You convinced me that this was your home — that I was your home.”
In the following action-packed clips, Jason Momoa’s character, Duncan Idaho, returns despite being killed in the first Dune movie. However, he comes with a “peace proposal” that he later reveals is “meant to destroy” Paul.
Robert Pattinson also joins the cast as a white-haired villain named Scytale with an intent to kill Paul.

“The future has a way of talking to me but I can’t see what’s ahead,” Paul can be heard saying moments before he is seemingly buried under a mountain of sand. “Forgive me for all I have done.”
When he unveiled the film’s first trailer in March, Villenueve, 58, explained that he “felt a responsibility to finish the story.”
“When you make a series of movies, you are in a relationship with the audience,” he said. “I went back home. I said to my crew, ‘I’m taking a break. That’s it. Bye-bye.’ And I went back home and I kept awaking in the middle of the night with those images.”

“I was supposed to do another movie in the meantime, but the image of Dune: Part Three, inspired by Dune Messiah, kept coming back, kept coming back,” he continued. “I said, ‘Oh, all right, let’s do it!’ “
In addition to the return of Chalamet, Zendaya, Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin in the upcoming sequel, Momoa’s son, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, will join the cast as Leto II, son of Paul Atreides. Ida Brooke is portraying his onscreen twin sister Ghanima.
“Dune Messiah was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero,” Villeneuve toldEmpirein August 2023. “Which is not what he wanted to do. My adaptation [of Dune] is closer to his idea that it’s actually a warning.”
Dune: Part Three is in theaters Dec. 18.
