Treasury Secretary Compares Canada To 'Little Yippy Dog'

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that Trump’s trade war with Canada would have a “negligible” effect on U.S. prices and compared the northern neighbor to a “little yippy dog.”

Asked by Laura Trump on Fox News how he saw the trade war with Canada playing out, Bessent reached for a canine comparison.

“I had a German shepherd and there was a Dachshund that used to antagonize her at the playground and it kind of reminds me of that,” Bessent said.

“This little yippy dog used to bark away and for a long time a 110-pound German shepherd was ignoring the Dachshund and then one day she had enough.”

Bessent then accused Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of walking away: “They were given the opportunity for a great trade deal and they didn’t want it.”

Bessent, an investor who made billions before joining the Trump administration, also seemed unbothered about the potential impact the tariffs would have on U.S. prices.

Calling it “not much of a hit to us,” Bessent said the impact would be “negligible.” “I would like someone to show me the statistical significance of the Canadian tariffs on U.S. prices. I’m happy to debate them,” the secretary added.
