Tyler Perry is returning to one of his long-running properties with a third film in his Why Did I Get Married? franchise.

On Thursday, July 9, Netflix released the teaser trailer for Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again?, a sequel to the 2007 hit Why Did I Get Married? and 2010’s Why Did I Get Married Too?. The third entry centers on the ensemble cast’s reunion at a wedding in Lake Como, Italy, where two children from the franchise’s core group of friends — portrayed by Perry, Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Michael Jai White, Tasha Smith, Sharon Leal and Lamman Rucker — are getting married. Taraji P. Henson, who has worked with Perry a number of times in the past, also joins the cast as the mother of the groom at the wedding in question.

“She’s actually been friends with the group for a long time,” Henson, 55, told PEOPLE recently. “She’s the fierce, powerful businesswoman who travels with the group to Lake Como to see her son get married… and let’s just say, may be traveling with some extra baggage of her own.”

“The couples reunite in celebration as Marcus (White, 58) and Angela’s (Smith, 55) daughter prepares to tie the knot,” reads an official synopsis for the movie. “After being apart for quite some time, they learn quickly that as much as things change, they stay the same. Realizing their children have grown up to be so much like them, they must reflect on the examples they’ve set and ask themselves that age-old question, why did they get married… again?”

Perry and Henson costar with series favorites Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Michael Jai White, Tasha Smith and Sharon Leal. The movie’s cast also includes Lamman Rucker, Everett Osborne, Laya Deleon Hayes, Jaden Michael, Charles L. Smith II and Sydney Winbush; Da’Vinchi, Armani Greer and Derrick A. King join the cast as the couples’ now-adult children.

Perry, 56, wrote and directed the new movie, which marks his second feature film release of 2026 after Tyler Perry’s Joe’s College Road Trip, which debuted on Netflix in February. Perry recently told PEOPLE that he actually broke his collarbone while riding a bike “two weeks before” filming began on the threequel. The writer-director-actor joked that the movie’s cast “will tell you their favorite experience is me walking around saying ‘watch my shoulder’ in every scene.”

“I was talking to everyone, directing and getting the cast to dance, but my shoulder was in a lot of pain and I kept telling them to watch my shoulder,” Perry recalled. “Their group chat ended up being titled ‘watch my shoulder.’”
