The U.S. military is reportedly prepared to potentially unleash a massive new assault on Iran within 96 hours of President Donald Trump giving the order.

American forces are already positioned in the Middle East for a potentially sweeping offensive targeting Iranian military installations, nuclear facilities and energy infrastructure, two anonymous U.S. officials told CNN. Although Trump has not authorized the strikes, the Pentagon's preparations come as Israel pushes for a joint military operation and American intelligence warns that Tehran could retaliate against U.S. personnel throughout the region.

"The Department is a planning organization, and its job is to develop and execute military options ordered by the President," a senior Pentagon official told the DCNF in a statement on Monday.

United States Central Command (CENTCOM) did not immediately respond for comment.

This offensive would go beyond past efforts to simply "mow the lawn" — strike radars, launchers and other Iranian assets to maintain homeostasis, a senior official told CNN, adding it "will be a big effort."

The U.S. may be lined up to execute a major military operation after midterms, the DCNF first reported on Oct. 18, citing a senior military official. (RELATED: Iran Claims It Hit Multiple Ships In Persian Gulf, Warns US Military Of Major Escalation)

U.S. intelligence assessments demonstrate that Iran and Houthis take the possibility of continued attacks by America or Israel very seriously. New military operations may lead to Iran and the Houthis targeting American citizens and facilities in the Middle East and beyond.

Iran has "substantially increased efforts to target U.S. personnel" and plotting efforts "have reached advanced stages in both the Middle East and certain other countries," according to an Oct. 17 memo from Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CNN reported.
